Ponderously dramatic string intro - the cheesy background to a deep-voiced film trailer - gives way to a self-consciously BIG angst powered by a relentlessly MOR beat. Yes, can't you K-tel?… it's Richard Ashcroft's debut solo single. It's the ballad of a tall, painfully thin man - alone in his hotel room with just an orchestra and a seriously effects-laden guitarist for company. It's going to be a long night of the soul… just the urbane him; his aching heart; and the tortured demeanour of the sensitive artist. With only the grittily, wistful cloak of that Northern voice for protection. Richard and his urge to speak to the universe of lovers. And for the universal. Four minutes and fifteen seconds long. And timeless. A guaranteed crossover hit. He's playing Our Tune. The verve of the man.
